Why Your Google Business Profile Might Be Costing You Customers

Most business owners set up their Google Business Profile once, forget about it, and assume it's doing its job. Sometimes it is. A lot of the time, it's quietly working against you.

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing that shows up when someone searches your business name or finds you on Google Maps. It's often the first thing a potential customer sees before they ever visit your website. And if it's incomplete, outdated, or missing a few key things, you're losing people before you even get a chance to talk to them.

The Problems We See Most Often

Outdated hours. This one sounds obvious, but it catches people all the time. Holiday hours, seasonal changes, a new closing time on Wednesdays. If Google shows you as open when you're not, customers show up, find the door locked, and leave a one-star review.

Missing or thin service descriptions. Google uses the text in your profile to understand what you do and match you to relevant searches. If your services section is blank or just lists names without any description, you're leaving ranking potential on the table.

No photos, or photos that are five years old. [VERIFY: Google's current data on how photos affect profile engagement] Profiles with recent, high-quality photos get meaningfully more clicks than those without. It doesn't have to be a professional shoot.

Not responding to reviews. Responding to reviews — both the good ones and the difficult ones — tells Google and prospective customers that there's an active, engaged business behind the listing.

No posts. Google lets you publish posts directly to your profile. Most businesses never use this. It's free visibility and a signal to Google that your profile is active. [VERIFY: whether GBP posts affect local ranking]

What Google Is Actually Looking For

Google's local algorithm broadly weighs three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. [VERIFY: current Google documentation on local ranking factors] You can't control distance. But relevance and prominence are both directly affected by how complete and active your GBP is.

A Quick Audit You Can Do Right Now

  1. Are your hours correct, including any special hours?
  2. Are all your services listed with at least a one-sentence description?
  3. Do you have at least five photos uploaded in the last 12 months?
  4. Have you responded to your most recent reviews?
  5. Have you posted any update in the last 30 days?

If the answer to any of those is no, you've got a quick win sitting right there.

Getting your GBP in shape is one of the highest-return, lowest-cost things a local business can do for their marketing. If you want help doing a proper audit, we can take that off your plate at MacLeod Growth Partners.
